The Malay scholarship affirmative -action policies that started in earnest in the 1970s had the best intentions: to narrow the gap between the poor Malay majority and the more prosperous 'other race' (which in reality meant Chinese).

But like many thing with good intention, thing stars to get rotten. Malay start to feel they have the divine right to subsidies and benefits rather than see them as a short term measures to catch up. Some Malay politicians, in particular are very fiery about defending this 'rights'. How did a crutch become a sabre?
